On March 8th at DiverseWorks Non Grata did their performance Force Majeure. Enjoy these magnificent pictures courtesy of Herb Melichar and Alex Barber
1KA from France Performed Every Night
It was a real thrill to witness a talent like 1KA from France. An important member of Non Grata, this guy was totally fascinating to watch and to listen to, whether he was performing or simply escaping into the sounds on the street.
Elena Nestorova, Words, Light and Sound at AvantGarden
Words from Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, Identity as circle of light calling through tiny electric sounds a heartbeat, heard on embrace. This performance was beautiful, and the huge white balloon floating away beyond any vision as the fiber optic light in it still shown bright. I’m still contemplating it’s possible destination.
Rodney Dickson and his F#*cked Up World
I had the great pleasure to work very closely on this performance piece with Rodney Dickson. When he first sent his list of materials needed it was funny enough to post. From then on our group of conspirators and F*#cked Up Houston characters started coming together. Talking to Rodney I gather that this piece is … Continue reading »

Jill Pangallo does Happy Go Sad at DiverseWorks
In her latest multimedia, persona-based performance, Jill Pangallo re-creates the compound and often-incongruous roles that people perform on a daily basis. Pangallo’s detailed, nuanced portraits oscillate between emotional and emotive polarities—funny and serious, happy and sad, tribute and observation—and endeavor to highlight what she believes to be an epidemic of denial and lack of self-awareness, … Continue reading »

Nestor Topchy, A Geometry of Painting
While in school in Baltimore in 1981, Topchy chanced upon an exhibition of Yves Klein’s IKB work. Topchy credits Klein’s use of a saturated ultramarine blue pigment that represented “the void” as a pivotal discovery. After using this color on spherical sculptures, Topchy realized their connection to Pysanky, the ornately decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs he … Continue reading »

Nyugen E. Smith performs at AvantGarden
I would have liked to see Nyugen perform again during the festival. It was one of the most moving segments of the three nights. Nyugen’s motions and references brought forth a tangible sense of sorrow. Photos courtesy Micheal E. Johnston

the goose a prisoner is a shadow of a strangulation. Odysseus’s sadness as he tried to embrace the shade of his mother–hugs in Hades are impossible. Orion Maxted Words
Here is the statement I wrote in the lead-up to the festival, part of which I read out at the seminar we gave: “The Paris ’68 slogan: ‘Take your dreams for Reality’ can be taken as a practical methodology. Brain-washing, another related example, first requires breaking-down the subject’s psychic-integrity; their information processing and concomitant social … Continue reading »
